Geocache Description:

Currently (Jan 2012) there are a significant amount of works in the area. You can still complete this but be sensible about where you park

Background

Across the paddocks towards the sea from GZ you will observe a location where the Akatore fault has ruptured. The fault scarp that resulted has cut across marine terraces that formed during the pleistocene period (2,588,000 to 11,700 years ago). The Akatore fault is one of the larger faults in the Dunedin area. Other named faults include the Titri fault and the recently discovered Green Island fault. Studies show that the Akatore fault has had activity in the last 1-10,000 years. The Titri fault hasn't had activity for 90,000 years and the Green Island fault is thought to be the cause of Dunedin's most recent sizeable earthquake in 1974. Further research about the Akatore fault can be done here. Further general reading (ODT articles) can be found here.

Logging Requirements

0. Preface any email with GC2G806 Fault Finding in the subject line and title and clearly note the question number and answer. Do not wait for a confirmation email to log but be prepared to be asked for additional information if your answers are slim.

1. At or near GZ the fault scarp should be clearly visible looking towards the sea. Don't waste time using streetview to observe as it isn't really visible. Prove that you've found the scarp by either physically describing it (height, visible length, direction of slope etc) or sketch or capture a picture of it with you or your GPSr included. Email answer or photo/sketch to gcstegan"at"gmail.com

2. Using the further research resource: when were the last two thrust events and how much uplift occurred for each? Email answers.

2012 Stegan’s EarthCache Masters Programme

It is not very feasible for many New Zealanders to get past the Bronze level on the earthcache.org programme becase you need three states for Silver which means leaving the country! So, as in 2010 I've decided to run a little sideshow on my new earthcaches this year... with the following points system:

5 points: First to find

3 points: 2nd to find

1 point: Logging a find

1-5 points: Special bonus questions.

At the end of 2012, I’ll issue certificates for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
