Geocache Description:

The coordinates above are to the public parking area. They are not the actual coordinates of the cache.

This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called ”Cache to Eagle” that showcases special contributions that Eagle Scouts have made to their community.

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project that — on average — requires 167 service hours. In 2008 alone, that translated to $16 million in service (based on the national volunteer hour value of $19.51).

This particular set of highlighted Eagle projects has benefited a nearby church and school. Since no geocaches are allowed on school properties, the actual geocache is next to it at a Baltimore county park.

Troop 355 is chartered by the Knights of Columbus Council associated with the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Essex, Maryland. In their 70+ years of existence, the Troop has produced over 100 Eagle Scouts. Mount Carmel parish has been the beneficiary of many Eagle Projects throughout the years. In particular, take a look at the playground near the soccer field. An Eagle Scout refurbished this playground by raising the money to have new fences put up, adding more mulch to the play area, repainting the benches, and planting the gardens near the edge of the parking lot. If you come to one of the Festivals at Mount Carmel (first weekends of May and October every year), you will see the festival stands are nicely painted and very sturdy. This was done as a separate Eagle project. When you buy some lunch or dinner at the hamburger and hot dog stand, you are ordering from the stand made as yet another Eagle project.

Over its first 100 years, Scouting has provided millions of hours of service to communities across America. For our 100th Anniversary, we’re celebrating that legacy with special service opportunities through "A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference." You can join us, and even earn a commemorative patch! The Baltimore Area Council, Chesapeake District series of Cache to Eagle caches will number 12 eventually, and each one will have a card that contains one of the 12 points of the Scout Law. Keep track of each one and when you’ve visited all twelve, send an email to Chessie-geocacher at hotmail.com with the codewords and the particular associated number within the series (this is number 1), and the first 25 people will be eligible to receive a commemorative Cache to Eagle patch. Visit Scouting.org/100years to learn more.

About the cache itself: This cache is hidden in a Baltimore County park. The public parking for this cache is on the north side of the park, off of Eastern Blvd. There is no close parking on the Old Eastern Avenue side, even though the cache is closer. You will have to do a little bushwhacking on this one but will do much less if you approach the cache from the Old Eastern Avenue side of the park (go all the way to the fence). Please tread lightly through the wooded section and hide the cache as well or better than you found it. The container is a large Lock N Lock container, covered with stuff that was on the ground. There are often hundreds of muggles throughout this park, but this particular area is relatively hidden from most of the ball fields. As a result, a little stealth may be required at certain times (after school and weekends, in particular).

Please keep in mind that the hours of Baltimore County Parks are from dawn to dusk. Please observe these hours as Baltimore County has been very good about geocaching in the past but if people are there when they shouldn’t be, they may not be so friendly to us. Also, there is a Baltimore County Police detachment adjacent to this park so night caching may result in detention.

To discover the true coordinates of this cache, you must do a little simple research. Boy Scout youth range in age from 11 ½ to 18 and form Troops, like Troop 355. The “feeder systems” for Boy Scouts are groups of younger boys in the first through fifth grades. The cache is located at N 39 AB.1ZY W 076 2D.9XW. To determine the ABCD for the coordinates of this cache, you have to find out what year (ABCD) the “feeder group” for Troop 355 was chartered. To determine the WXYZ for this cache, you need to determine the four digit (WXYZ) identification number of the Knights of Columbus Council that charters these groups. These can be found through Internet research. WXYZ can also be found near the Parking Coordinates.

FTF gets an unactivated “Cache to Eagle” geocoin.

Congratulations to czar7 for FTF.
