Welcome to Mabel!
After seeing all of the caches placed near the "Welcome to..."
signs in the area, Team Harmonious decided that Mabel needed an
official welcoming cache as well! Also thought it might be fun to
throw a little fun fact action out there, so we hope you enjoy our
ramblings!
Mabel is a city in Fillmore County, Minnesota and is also home to
the Mabel-Canton Cougars which sport the school colors of blue,
red, and white. The population was 766 at the 2000 census.
Established in 1879, Mabel is "Rural America's Steam Engine
Capital." Every September, Mabel hosts the "Hesper-Mabel Steam
Engine Days". This festival began in 1953 with the intention of
celebrating the steam engine and the use of steam power to "thresh"
the grain. A love for the steam engine was very strong in a few men
in the Hesper community and they felt this part of farm history
should not be forgotten. Other communities were holding special
days to keep this method of harvesting alive, so why not Hesper and
Mabel?!
Steam Engine Days is a big part of Mabel's history and during that
week, people from Mabel, Canton, Hesper, and all of the surrounding
communities gather for all sorts of old fashioned fun! There are
parades, dances, food, games, music, and even a pageant! Softball
games throughout the weekend are a popular place to be, and of
course there are plenty of tractors to see!
Thanks for looking and Happy caching!
