Anosin-Borisoglebsky Monastery was founded in 1820 as a female community of the local church. This community was initiated by the Princess Evdokiya Nikolaevna Mescherskaya, an aunt of the famous poet Fyodor Tyutchev, to commemorate her husband. In early years, the community was simply an almshouse, while an official monastery appeared in 1823. The Princess Eudokiya was made a nun under the name Evgeniya and became the first abbess of the monastery. The monastery was famous for its lifestyle, spiritual and economical activities. It was often referred as "Women's Optina Pustyn'", whereas the experience in agriculture, cattle breeding, and crafts was recognized throughout Russia.
The construction of the monastery took place in 1824-1837. First, the abbess built the Trinity Church on her own money. Later, this church became a cathedral and two smaller churches were constructed.
The Trinity Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Boris and Gleb (1810-1812) by the name of the side chapel, was built in the classicism style following the traditions of Kazakov's school. It is a rural church with a refectory which is linked to the main body of the cathedral by a short passage. The bell-tower is located above the western porch. The Church of Dmitry of Rostov at the Holy Gate is incorporated into the monastery wall. Built in 1824 in the Empire style, it was used as a parish church. Both churches were subject to later reconstructions and decayed during the Soviet time. Now, they are fully recovered, with freshly painted walls shining in the sun. The third church, built in honor of St. Anastasia, is presently restored as a part of the hospital.
The whole territory is surrounded by a brick wall with four towers at the corners. Evegiya (Evdokiya), the founder and the first abbess of the monastery, passed away on Feb. 3, 1837 and was buried in the Trinity Cathedral. Despite the development of the monastery, the village remained small. According to the 10th census of 1858, the village comprised 26 houses only.
In 1927, the monastery was closed. Its land was used by an agricultural commune. Rumours say that the commune collapsed as soon as the supplies of the monastery stock were over. Later on, the territory was taken by a Machine and Tractor Station. Needless to say, nobody cared about the churches during that time.
The monastery was reopened in 1992 as a patriarchial metochion (podvorye). Further on, the Decree of the Holy Synod from 29/12/1999 approved the transformation of the metochion into a stauropegial monastery (i.e., the monastery subordinated directly to the Patriarch). At that time, the active reconstruction of the monastery was started. The Archimandrit Spiridon, the present dean of the monastery, is known as one of the best managers of the Russian Orthodox Church. He has established agriculture in The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius and since 7 years works in Anosino.
To trackable items Owners: this listing has been published both on geocaching.com and geocaching.su websites as an attempt to unite former-USSR and worldwide geocaching communities. Unfortunately, local geocachers are still unaware of trackable items, and despite the fact that we have mentioned all necessary information in geocaching.su cache listing, there still exists a probability that your trackable may be confused with an ordinary souvenir. Please keep this fact in mind when deciding whether to drop your trackable: on the one hand it would be a great opportunity for local geocachers to get acquainted with trackables, on the other - there still exists a certain risk of losing your trackable here.
