This micro cache is placed at a park in Columbus. This is a very short 2 stage multi. Parking is available behind Columbus Town Hall. The terrain rating is 1.5 due to lack of wheelchair accessibility for the second stage. It is a short walk over mowed grass from parking area, so may be accessible sometimes. Therre is also a playground here for the kids.
Columbus Community Centre In 1853, the first council for the Township of East Whitby was formed, and the first reeve was John Ratcliffe. From this point in time on to 1870 the village grew to over 300 inhabitants. The village had: a township hall, 4 churches, blacksmiths, a post office, an Orange Hall, stores, carpenters, shoe shops, tailors, dressmakers, mills, asheries, copper shops, a tannery, a furniture factory, a harness shop, and 4 hotels. Columbus Community Centre was built in 1859 and was the former East-Whitby Town Hall. The Town Hall was used as a hall for the community of Columbus and the office and Chambers for the East-Whitby Township until 1973. The cairn was placed to celebrate the Centennial of Canada in 1867. I wasn't able to find any other information about the bell itself though. If anyone knows about the bell, please post a note for it. I was going to make this a regular park and grab cache, but when I saw the plaque I decided to make this the first multi cache that we have placed. Math is nice and easy too, there shouldn't have to be any head scratching involved in this at all.
Any future multis may be more involved, but I think this is a good way to start off. Feedback is always welcome. For the final coordinates go to the given coordinates where you will see a cairn and a building. Look up at the building and you will see a 4 digit number above the door. Take the last 3 digits of that number and subtract 15=AAA You will see a bell on top of a cairn. The bell has a 2 digit number. Multiply the 2 digit number by 2 and add 506. That number equals BBB For the final: N 43 58.AAA W 78 54.BBB The cache is wired in place, just slide it out of the wire loop for quickest access. Congratulations to volksie99 for a quick FTF!
