Pittsburgh is my favorite city in the US due to its steep hills, confusing street patterns, and old row houses. This is an opportunity to see parts of Pittsburgh many are unfamiliar with and appreciate the city for the qualities that make it unique, like no other city in the country. LONG walk, occasionally on STEEP terrain - be prepared!
This is a sequel to GC23NJT , “A walk through seldom-visited nooks and crannies”, held in March 2010. The event was a great success, and I plan on holding a similar walk at least once a year…until we run out of nooks and crannies to explore!
I'm a cacher from Minnesota, but I travel to Pittsburgh frequently. I've devised a second uniquely interesting walking route up and down staircase streets, through historic neighborhoods on steep hills with row houses, through parks and woods, possibly down some former street right-of-ways with trails (paper streets), and more. We will be taking the incline down, riding the bus 3 miles away, and then walking back to the original meeting point via this route. The route will be modified to stop at several caches near it if people are interested in stopping at them. The total walk will be 3-5 miles, depending on the interest of the group to see certain areas and caches. Keep in mind that the goal of the walk is not to get from the start to the end by the shortest distance possible – the goal is to see as many interesting nooks and crannies as we can!
This event is not for everybody. Those who attend MUST be prepared to walk 3-5 miles and climb up and down steep slopes, possibly passing through areas with no trail. Some spots will be steep, but the majority of distance should be relatively flat. Unlike this past March’s walk, all the neighborhoods along this route are nice, so crime is not a concern. There may not be restroom facilities along the route.
Those who attend also MUST bring $4.00 in exact change, $2 for the incline and $2 for the bus - the drivers will not give change! This is DIFFERENT from last time – this time we need separate fares for both the incline and the bus. Please be prepared to commit to the long walk before attending. If you decide not to go after we arrive at the start of the route, depending on timing you may have to wait for the bus back to where we started for up to 30 minutes, thanks to Port Authority and their terrible service frequencies. Plus you'll need another $4.00 in exact change.
MEETING INFO: Meet at 11:15AM on 11/6/2010 at the posted coordinates, just west of the top of the Mon incline. We are meeting on Grandview Ave, NOT on the nearby McArdle Roadway. Please be on time! We need to ride down the incline and walk to the bus stop at Station Square before the bus leaves shortly after 11:45. If you’re late, we may already be gone. If it’s more convenient, feel free to meet us at the bottom of the incline, but be sure to watch for the group! We’re meeting at the top because parking is free there and I believe parking is expensive at the bottom.
PARKING SITUATION: This will not be nearly as much of an issue as it was last March. There is ample free parking on the back streets of Mt. Washington, the neighborhood in which we are meeting. Allow time to find parking and walk a few blocks to the meeting point.
I think it'll be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to see parts of the city most are unfamiliar with!
Many thanks to Red 07Z for field checking the areas I wasn’t sure we could go!!!
