Take the Leroy/Piedmont exit towards Piedmont and park just off the road and walk about .15 miles. There is a bridge built to accommodate wagons to cross. Check out the Pioneer gravesites on the way.
The Crossing of the Muddy was a pioneer campsite from the early mountain man era. Over 70,000 pioneers camped here as well as Johnston’s army marching on Salt Lake in 1858. Brigham Young and the vanguard company camped here July 9-10 1847. Moses Byrne built Muddy Creek Station here and operated it for the Pony express until turning it over to Charles Guild, his brother in law in 1868. Byrne built a toll bridge and traded supplies, horses, and oxen to the emigrants. The Guild family owns this land and have given permission for the cache to be placed and for you to search for it. It would be a courtesy to call them at 307 789-3171 and let them know your are exploring the area.
The grave sites here include Peter Fjeldsted born Apr 14 1821 in Denmark. In 1850 he learned of Mormonism from Erastus Snow and he was baptized in 1853. Consequently, his wife, Kirsten Jensen and he separated in 1855. Peter served as President of the conference from 1857-1859 when he left to join his brother in Utah. He died here and his grave was discovered by the man who had succeeded him in Denmark who was emigrating in 1862.
Catherine Jones Bennett was a member of the William Budge company at age 67 when she died here Sep.26, 1860 leaving 6 children.
Anna Hansen from Lolland Denmark and a member of the Rowley Handcart company died here Aug 29, 1859 at 49 years leaving husband and 5 children.
The Willie Handcart company camped her after their rescue and on Nov 24, 1856 the Martin Handcart company did the same.
Most of the graves of those pioneers who died along the trail are unmarked and their stories are forgotten.
Please respect the history of these courageous pioneers as you visit and carry out any trash you may find and leave no trace of your visit.
Enjoy!
