During heavy fighting in the winter and spring of 1945 in the border region between Luxembourg and Belgium as well as Luxemburg and Germany, the American Department of Veterans Affairs recovered their own and German war casualties from the fighting zone and buried them in two provisional graveyards behind the front. German soldiers were buried in a field of the parish Sandweiler, Americans in a field near Hamm (at a distance of about 1,5 Km from one another) . Once the U.S Army had finished burying the dead, the German graveyard contained 5 599 graves.
In 1952, the first war graves agreement between Germany and a neighboring country was concluded between Luxembourg and Germany.
German gravesites with a total of 5 286 war casualties were at that time still to be found at 150 locations in Luxembourg. These were mostly mass graves with only incomplete documentation. The "Volksbund" also moved thes dead to Sandweiler. The site at Sandweiler offered sufficient space for an expansion and with that final German war cemetery. Moving these war casualties also offered the opportunity for identifying any of the yet unknown dead. Approximately 10 900 German soldiers have found here their final resting place.

Durant les rudes combats de l'hiver et du printemps 1945 dans les zones frontalières Belgique/Luxembourg et Luxembourg/ Allemagne, le service des sepultures americain à procedé à l'exhumation hors de la zone de combat de ses propres morts ainsi que des soldats allemands. Ils furent ensuite inhumés dans deux cimetières provisoires dans une zone située à l´arrière des troupes: les Allemands sur le terrain de la commune de Sandweiler, les Americains sur celle de Hamm (à environ 1,5 Km l´une de l´autre). A la fin des travaux du service des sepultures de l´armée americaine, le cimetière allemand comptait 5 599 tombes.
En 1952, le gouvernement luxembourgeois et le gouvernement de la Republique Fédérale d´Allemagne conclurent la première Convention concernant les sepultures militaires de l´Allemagne avec un pays voisin.
A cette epoque, il y avait encore des tombes de soldats allemands sur environ 150 sites luxembourgeois qui comptaient en tout 5 286 morts. Il n´y avait surtout des ossuaires pour lesquels on ne disposait que d'informations incompletes. Le "Volksbund" a egalement transferé ces morts a Sandweiler. Ici la surface disponible permettait l'extansion du site et l'aménagement définitif d´un cimetière militaire allemand. Par ces exhumations l´identification d´un certain nombre de morts jusque la inconnu a été possible. Environ 10.900 victimes de guerre ont trouvé ici leur dernière demeure.

Während den schweren Kämpfen im Winter und Frühjahr 1945 im luxemburgisch-belgischen und luxemburgisch-deutschen Grenzgebiet hat der amerikanische Gräberdienst eigene und deutsche Gefallene aus der Kampfzone geborgen und sie in seinem rückwärtigen Heeresgebiet in zwei provisorische Gräberfeldern bestattet: die Deutschen auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Sandweiler, die Amerikaner auf dem von Hamm (rund 1,5 Kilometer von einander entfernt). Nach Abschluss der Arbeiten durch den Gräberdienst der US-Armee zählte der deutsche Friedhof 5 599 Gräber.
Zwischen der luxemburgischen Regierung und der Regierung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wurde 1952 das erste Kriegsgräberabkommen Deutschlands mit einem Nachbarland geschlossen.
Damals befanden sich noch an 150 Stellen in Luxemburg deutsche Soldatengräber mit insgesamt 5 286 Toten. Zumeist waren es Massengräber, über die nur unvollkommene Aufzeichnungen vorlagen. Der Volksbund bettete auch diese Toten nach Sandweiler um. Hier war genügend Gelände für eine Erweiterung und damit zur Anlage einer endgültigen deutschen Kriegsgräberstätte vorhanden. Durch die Umbettungen ergab sich die Möglichkeit, noch unbekannte Tote zu identifieren. Rund 10 900 Kriegstote haben hier ihre letzte Ruhestätte erhalten.
