This cache is within the Sherando Lake Recreation Area of the George Washington National Forest. Sherando Lake has an entrance fee year round and is offically closed from October through April. It is sometimes still accessible during that time using a self-pay option. If you are good for a long hike, you can also access this cache fee-free year round using the Torry Ridge Trail. When Mrs. E4 was eight, she did a puppet show of the Tortoise and the Hare. What she remembers is painting half of a Legg's egg (children of the 70s will remember these) to make the tortoise shell and the last line of the script, "Slow and steady wins the race!"
If you are hiking anywhere on the high trails of Sherando Lake, slow and steady will be your theme. For this cache, take a slow and steady trip to the bottom of the rock slide that is a distinguishing feature of Sherando Lake. To avoid a nasty uphill bushwhack, STAY ON THE TRAIL UNTIL YOU REACH THE BOTTOM OF THE ROCK SLIDE before heading to your left to the cache. As you head uphill, if there are still trees adjacent to the trail on your right hand side, stay on the trail!!! The trail is steep and some rocks are loose - please take care!
The cache is a bison tube attached to a larger host. If you are very short, it would help to bring a taller friend - sorry, but options for placement of this host were limited. Have fun!
