Ghosts of Hwy 91: UnOfficial Cache of R in R Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

dpo: Another that has been fun for a long time, but with the development of the festival grounds, you can no longer see the patches of dirt that used to be the driveways, or the long dead trees that once graced the El Rancho's lawns yet stood as reminders, I believe its time to end this cache.

The Ghosts will remain, but the signs of their existence have been further erased by the development of Las Vegas. Thanks to all the cachers who stopped here for a moment over the last six years or so and remembered, or learned of the past for the first time.

Geocache Description:

Taking you back the the very beginning of the Las Vegas Strip.....
Also, this cache, along with Big Wheelin' & Dealin' GC2GDB8 became the UnOfficial Geocaches of Rock in Rio since they are closest to the concert grounds. I wonder if Metallica and Taylor Swift remembered to bring their GPSr's.

If needed, feel free to replace a full log with an appropriate size piece of paper- Thanks

This cache takes you to the front lawn of the first resort in Las Vegas, but will require your imagination.

The El Rancho Vegas was the first place to stay on what was Old Highway 91 as you headed for Los Angeles, "way out 2 miles south of town", long before anyone ever called it 'The Strip' This is where people would stay their 6 weeks- long enough to claim residency and get a easy divorce back in the 1940's.

Opened in 1941, the El Rancho was a western themed resort, well known for its windmill landmark, fine dining and opera house that featured the top names in entertainment of the day.

The placement of the resort was no accident: Being south of San Francisco St. (Now Sahara) they were not in the city limits of Las Vegas, and escaped paying city taxes, just as Tony Cornero did around 1931 with his hotel 'The Meadows' near the corner of Fremont and 25th St. Interestingly enough, it also met its end by fire, when firemen refused to fight the blaze, pointing out it "Wasn't in the city"

It all came to a sudden end for El Rancho Vegas in June 1960, when a fire destroyed the main building, and the land sat empty and unused until 2015 when MGM thought they could out do the real Rock in Rio with false fronts and astroturf.

Cache is log only, Bring your own pen, Be aware of muggles and replace just as found.
There will likely be lots of passerbys, but few will notice you as you rest awhile and peer into the past.........
