Since I have always been interested in railroads, I’ve decided to start a series of caches highlighting some of the physical features that still remain of railroads that no longer exist in the central KY area.
The Louisville and Nashville Railroad has a long and colorful history and many books have been written about it. This section of the line was built in 1890 as the Richmond, Nicholasville, Irvine, and Beattyville, but after financial difficulties, it was reorganized as the Louisville and Atlantic in 1899. The Louisville and Nashville gained control of the L&A in 1909. Declining traffic as roads improved doomed the line and it was abandoned in 1932 from the distilleries near Millville to Irvine.
Although the line along McCracken Pike in Woodford County is beautiful, I was amazed at this section. Old Railroad Road is built exactly on the roadbed and it's easy to imagine that you're riding behind a steam engine 100 years ago while driving up the road. I probably could have hidden more caches but only had 2 with me. More may be in the future.
Cache is a camo'd pill bottle
