Cache placed with approval of Green Ridge State Forest manager.
Green Ridge State Forest is one of Maryland's largest state forests and consists of approximately 46,000 acres of pine, oak, and hickory forests. Recreational opportunities include camping, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, public shooting range, hunting, fishing, and paddling. The nearby C & O Canal (operated by the National Park Service) offers biking, hiking, and horseback riding opportunities. The state of Maryland obtained the first portions of GRSF in 1931, and has continued to manage the forest for many uses.
Point Lookout is one of the most scenic overlooks Green Ridge State Forest has to offer. From this popular vantage point, you are overlooking lands George Washington historically owned in Virginia (now West Virginia). Point Lookout is along the road established by pioneer settler Thomas Cresap from Oldtown to Fort Cumberland. In the days of the Green Ridge Valley Orchards, the Mertens also had an orchard camp near here. This section of the Potomac River offers a popular day float trip from Bonds Landing to Little Orleans.
Carroll road is a dirt road, but most vehicles shouldn't have trouble getting to this cache if accessing Carroll Road via Oldtown Orleans Road. Continuing on Carroll Road beyond the Carroll Chimney and Carroll Road campsites is not recommended for low clearance vehicles.
