A roadside cache on SH 83.
Downland Irrigation Scheme was finally commisioned in 2005 after many years of discussions and planning.
The pump station opposite to where you will park contains 2 large pumps capable of delivering 2 cumecs of water per second (2 tonnes of water per second). The water is pumped 600 meters in a 1.8 meter diameter pipe along to a canal 140 m above the intake structure. As can be seen from the extensive electrical substation the electrical energy to drive these massive pumps is large.
Currently 10,000 hectares of land in the adjacient Waiareka valley are being irrigated with a further 10,000Ha due to come into the scheme.
The cache is a 500ml container with log book only, bring your own pen.
