This cache has been placed on the Pocomoke State Forest (public land). The woods at GZ are approximately 70 years old and is the site of a former Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp. If your in the mood to explore, you can still see reminants of the 1940's camp where forest workers once lived.
This cache is located in a forgotten camp (goast town) that housed conservation workers durring the Great Depression. The CCC was a program that FDR put together to create jobs and improve the natural resources durring tough times. Much of the Pocomoke State forest was planted by the CCC crews during the 1940's. The crews also built wildlife food plots throughout the forest and improved many of the roads. The road adjacent to the site is named camp road; a testimony of the camps location.
The Pocomoke Forest is a well managed sustainable forest. It is certified as such by both the Sustainable Forest Initiative and the Forest Stewardship council. To learn more about the State Forest, visit the Maryland DNR web site.
