Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH)-Gebiet
Die Europäische Union hat am 21. Mai 1992 eine Richtlinie zum Naturschutz erlassen. Die Richtlinie 92/43/EWG oder Fauna-Flora-Habitat-Richtlinie (FFH-Richtlinie) dient der Erhaltung der natürlichen Lebensräume sowie der wildlebenden Tiere und Pflanzen. Neben "Fauna" (Tiere) und "Flora" (Pflanzen) findet hier auch "Habitat" (Lebensraum) eine besondere Berücksichtigung. Mit dem einstimmigen Beschluss der Mitgliedstaaten der EU von 1992 soll ein zusammenhängendes Netz von Schutzgebieten, das NATURA 2000 genannt wird, geschaffen werden.

Habitatsdirektive
Der Kahleberg gehört zu einem Härtlingszug aus Quarzporphyr und ist mit 905 m ü. NN die höchste Erhebung der oberen Lagen des Osterzgebirges. Die umgebenden Hochflächen sind durch den einheitlichen Verlauf der Kerbsohlentäler in nordwestlicher Richtung wenig zerschnitten. Im Bereich des Porphyrzuges, der sich zwischen Zinnwald und Oberfrauendorf auf einer Breite von 8 bis 10 km erstreckt, sind Kerbtäler charakteristisch. Basalte finden sich östlich von Sayda und am Geisingberg. Der größte Teil der Landschaft ist mit Fichten bewaldet, die jedoch zum Teil deutliche Schädigungen aufzeigen. Weiterhin befinden sich in den oberen Lagen auch Laubhölzer sowie Moore und Torfe. Talsperren und Halden zeugen bei bei Altenberg-Zinnwald vom Bergbau in dieser Gegend.

On 21 May 1992 the European Union issued a directive to nature conservation. Directive 92/43/EEC or habitats directive aims to conserve natural habitats and wild fauna or flora. In addition to "fauna" (animals) and „flora“ (plants) will also find "habitat" (Habitat) special consideration. With the unanimous decision of the Member States of the EU in 1992 a coherent network of protected areas called Natura 2000 is to be created.

The Mountain Kahleberg is part of a quartz porphyry area called Härtlingszug. With its 905 m above sea level is it the highest elevation of the upper layers of the Mountains Osterzgebirge. The surrounding uplands are cut by the uniform course of the notch bottom valleys in a northwesterly direction. In the area of the porphyry train which extends between Zinnwald and Frauendorf to a width of 8 to 10 km V-shaped valleys are characteristic. Basalts are found east of Sayda and near Geisingberg. The largest part of the landscape is forested with spruce. But the sprucefir there are significant damaged. Furthermore in the upper layers there are deciduous forest, bog and peat bog. Dams and dumps testify that Altenberg and Zinnwald are mining areas.
