Geocache Description:

Historic Honiton Multi cache

Our inspiration for doing this multi cache in our hometown of Honiton came from enjoying one around Sidmouth a few months ago. We were surprised that even though we are local, the cache took us to unvisited locations and was enjoyably informative.

Throughout Honiton many places of historical note, bear blue plaques, which summarise why they are of interest. This was a Rotary International centenary project of 2005 undertaken and initiated by Honiton Rotary Club, subsequently taken up by several other Rotary Clubs in Devon.

You may already be aware that Honiton is famous for it’s lace, pottery and market but it was also a historically important stop on a trade route. Even now, when people are on-route to Cornwall, Honiton continues to be a popular stop.
If you visit the museum on a Saturday, you may see a couple of teenagers lace making. It’s good to see the tradition is enjoying interest amongst the younger generation.

Honiton has a street market weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It has several antique shops and the many different coffee shops are sure to please.

During the 2nd half of July each year Honiton celebrates one 13th century tradition
“Hot pennies” (Tuesday after the 19th) and a more recent “Charter Day”. The latter was adopted as an annual event after the Market charter 750th anniversary celebrations proved such a success in 2007. On the 4th Saturday in October the annual carnival takes place. All these events enjoy popularity and provide wonderful entertainment for all ages.

You will need to collect information from each plaque in order to acquire the co-ordinates for the final that is within 1.25 mile of the town centre. The GPS was a little un certain in the built up area, but the plaques themselves are easily spotted.

The headline co-ords are for question 1. There is a suitable car park very close by.

Please be VERY careful when crossing roads and use the pedestrian crossings provided.
The final is slightly out of Honiton but we hope you enjoy the location. There is a small lay-by very near the final location, which we would prefer you to use. The cache is a small clip lock container with room for swaps and small trackables.
