The Grande Randonnee (GRNC1) is a walking track that goes from
Prony in the southeast of Grande Terre, New Caledonia all the way
to the Dumbea River near to Noumea. It takes 5 days to walk it, but
can be done in stages. Twin Falls, also known as the Cascade du
Carenage, is 8 km along the first leg from Prony to the Refuge de
Neocallitopsis. You can also intercept the GR1 on the road to Goro
Nickel and walk down the trail to the Cascade reducing the walking
distance to about 3km each way. The trail is easy enough to follow
as it is marked and there is even a small sign on the trail with an
arrow pointing to the waterfall. The short trail from the GR1 down
to the waterfall is steep and the waterfall is surrounded by big
rocks. After you enter the waterfall area itself, climb down the
rocks, passing a big rock on your left, then climb up again moving
to the left and the highest easily accessible rock is where the
cache is hidden. The treasure rock has a (heh heh) X on it - made
from two natural cracks. Well, it's tilted clockwise so it is half
way between an X and a + sign. The cache is under the rock
protected by several small stones. You can see an interactive
virtual reality photograph of this waterfall on 360Cities.net
and Google Earth. Click "full screen" and then click and drag on
the image to look around. Hint - If you were the person you can see
taking a photo in the sphere image, all you would need to do is
turn left and you'd be looking at the Treasure Rock.
