Rayado - Lucien Maxwell's 1st trading post on SF Trail c.1848. Maxwell's friend Kit Carson moved here April 1849. A small garrison of soldiers stationed here before Fort Union was built to protect the travelers. Most "Indian" problems were plains Indians - Kiowa and Comanche.
