Geocache Description:

This Earthcache will bring you to a shoreline protection system referred to as shoreline Armour or Rip-Rap.

Shoreline erosion is a very good example of the powers of mother nature it can be seen in many locations in this area of New Brunswick. Shoreline erosion is caused by the repeated pounding of waves against a shoreline.

There are four ways waves can break down a shoreline:
Hydraulic action,
This occurs when air within the cracks in the shoreline material compress from the force of the water on it as the air compresses it lossens the material so that repeated pounding breaks the material free.

Attrition,
This action occurs when loose material carried with the water collides with the shoreline grinding and chipping each other causing the material to become smaller and smaller and allowing the material to be easily carried away.

Corrasion,
This occurs when material from the shoreline breaks free and then is used to further erode the shoreline again.

(the difference between attrition and corrasion is the source of material attrition is material from elsewhere and corrasion is local material)

Corrosion,
This form of erosion occurs not on the wave action but based on the ph level of the sea water. It occurs when the ph level of the sea is below 7.0 when this occurs particularly high ph level rock is corroded away. wave action then takes part by removing the corroded material.

When man steps in and is in need of protection of certain areas (for protection of sensitive areas or construction) there are ways of protecting a shore line from any wave action erosion.

One of these ways is to line a shoreline with what is called rip-rap. Rip-Rap is a system that lessens the wave's energy by placing a hard rock along the coast. As the waves pound on this rock the shoreline underneath is protected. Where the shoreline is of a very light and soft material a fabric is placed under the rock so that the water can't carry away the underlying material.

When this causeway and bridge were built a portion of the shoreline was extended and in order to lessen the impact on the causeway Rip-Rap was installed.

As this is an earthcache and there is no physical container just an earth lesson please preform these tasks in order to claim this as found.

1.Determine which erosion action would take place here if the Rip-Rap wasn't installed. (Check the existing shoreline)
2. What type of rock is placed here to lessen the wave's energy.
3. Take a picture of yourself or your GPSr with the Rip-Rap in the background (optional)

Send the answers to the questions to the e-mail in my profile.

Have fun!!
