Over the river and through the woods and up some rocks
In Smith Rock State Park. (day use fee area) Walk down to the river and cross the bridge. Turn right, upriver. The cache is within the state park boundaries, but but barely. There are paths you can use to within several feet of the cache, so it is not an especially rough hike. Do not attempt to climb the rimrock (the most direct route). The only difficult part is the change in elevation in and out of the canyon.
You will be walking through some of the most spectacular scenery in Central Oregon. Wildlife that you might see along the way includes deer, rabbits, beaver, river otter, lizards, snakes, and many kinds of birds. You will walk below two Golden Eagle nest sites.
Wear sturdy shoes and carry water. In summer watch for rattlesnakes. In winter parts of the trail may be muddy or icy.
