The small town of Manningtree on the river Stour in Essex has a wide and varied history. However, perhaps one of the best known historical personalities from the area is Matthew Hopkins; the Witchfinder General.
To find out more about Hopkins, have a look at my multi-cache in the Manningtree town area which is set up for the geocacher to visit the various locations he was known to frequent (The Witchfinder General - GC2GTNZ).
It is most widely agreed upon that at his death Hopkins was buried in a simple unmarked grave at St Mary’s church, Mistley Heath.
Unfortunately, the churchyard itself is now private property (as we discovered when we went to place this cache!) so the cache itself is outside of the boundary wall. Please do not climb over the wall - you will be trespassing! If you look over the wall from the cache site, you will see the ruins of St Mary's church and a couple of old gravestones.
This cache is a regular sized tupperware box. Containing several SWAG items (including my signature rubber ducky) and a logbook/pen. You may wish to bring gardening gloves for this cache due to it's location... If you're not walking to this cache, parking can be difficult, but there is a layby just down the road (please watch the traffic if you walk from there as there are two blind bends to contend with) or fairly close to the GZ is the entrance to a field which you could use for a couple of minutes assuming the farmer isn't about!
