Geocache Description:

This is the second cache in my Birdwatch Series - unsurprisingly it will take you to some of the places I like to go birdwatching! There is a small parking area outside the Nature Reserve and a nice, flat footpath leading to the cache which can also be used to turn your trip into a circular walk around the area. A great place to walk the dog!

The idea behind this cache series is to bring more people to some places that I go birdwatching, but all of the caches are in places where it's great to go for a walk. This cache is in a medium-sized container inside a camo-bag with some of the requisite goodies. The original contents include two travel bugs and some empty film canisters to take for caches as well as the logbook, pen and pencil.

This cache is located along a public footpath through Hope Carr Nature Reserve in Leigh. I originally had 'high' hopes (hence the name) for hiding this cache but when my original location didn't work very well, I had to lower my sights a little - please bear this in mind when you go looking for it.

Whilst you're here, why not stop off to look at the ducks, geese and other birds in the area. There is a viewing point overlooking the main lake, but it's so overgrown now you may need to get a little closer.

From this area I have seen the following birds during the year:

  • Kestrel
  • Green Sandpiper
  • Heron
  • Little Grebe
  • Gadwall
  • Coot
  • Moohen
  • Mallard
  • Canada Goose
  • Carrion Crow
  • Woodpigeon

There's a guide to Hope Carr Nature Reserve from a birding point of view here at the Manchester Birding Website. If you want to know what's been seen recently look here on the Hope Carr thread of the Manchester Birding Forum.

Please note: you do not need to climb any fences or steep banks and under no cirumstances should you go anywhere near the sludge tanks of the sewage farm.

Don't forget to take your binoculars with you and good luck! I'm looking forward to reading your logs.
