This cache has been archived.

status quo: As this cache has been out of action for too long and the cache owner has not responded or performed any maintenance, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to un-archive it.

Geocache Description:

All that glitters is not Gold. Parking for this cache is best at TeRu Reserve a Restoration and Track Project by the Nukuhou Stream Care Group. Parking is on the left (travelling from Whakatane) just past the Cheddar Valley Pottery Studio – worth a visit if you have time. The owners help to organise the Care Group and have had a big part in all the restoration work in this area.

This cache was placed because I needed some where to put a Gold Nugget that wanted to visit Gold caches. The only Gold I could think of in the EBOP other then Whakatane's claim to being the sunshine capital of NZ, was "White Gold". At $20 per 200grms or there abouts whitebait are certainly living up to this name.
These tiny transparent creatures found navigating our streams, are the young of some of NZ's precious native fish. Some of the species you are likely to catch in your whitebait net are inanga, Koaro, banded kokopu, gaint kokopu, shortgaw kokopu, smelt, bullies and juvenile eels. The first five are considered true whitebait.
Whitebait are in decline - we are losing more of them each year. Mostly, this is due to a lack of clean, healthy rivers and streams for the adult fish. Planting and fencing stream edges can lead to better whitebaiting in future years.
The Whitebait season is open from 15 Aug - 30 Nov. There are fines of up to $5000 for taking out of season and/or using illegal equipment - maybe that's why they are called 'White Gold".
