The incident
John William Hume, a teacher, was enjoying a picnic with fellow teachers and students at "Arncliff" - a property nearby. In the afternoon they walked to "Big Nobby's" where Hume lost his footing while trying to negotiate a very steep and slippery ledge of rocks. He fell into a deep hole at the base of Nobby’s hill near the entrance to the cave.
Without hesitation or regard to his own safety, his mate Henry Gardner plunged into the waters to assist and managed to grasp Humes hair, but soon lost grip amidst the whirl of heaving seas and despite repeated attempts, Hume's body disappeared. Others in the group then tried to assist Gardner, but realising that more lives would be sacrificed, he declined, an outstanding display of selflessness which cost him his life.
John William Hume.
The Cache
This is a simple offset cache that requires you to work out an inconsistency. We are constantly amazed at the errors in history – be it spelling, dates or facts. In this case it was the students of the St. Josephs Vocational College that blundered when renovating the monument.
Have a look at the 2 plaques dedicated to John Hume and Henry Gardiner. There is a glaring inconsistency between the two sets of facts!
Work out the inconsistency and do the following:
For the South decimals, take the “inconsistency” and subtract 13. The resultant number is to be deducted from the posted south decimals.
For the East decimals, take the “inconsistency” and subtract 11. The resultant number is to be deducted from the posted east decimals.
The cache is just a short distance away and please be careful with the vegetation – it is fragile and there are also some nasty thorny type vines.
The terrain difficulty is high, because when it is wet the track up is very slippery - good shoes are an advantage!
