The site may have been a Bronze Age Barrow and site of a Roman Shrine. The common thorn was being used as a boundry marker in 948. The present tree was planted at the suggestion of the John Clare Sopciety in 1996. "Oh Langley Bush! The shepherd's sacred shade" John Clare 1821.
