Langley or Langdyke Bush is a hawthorn growing on a circular mound at the junction of four parishes, Ufford, Helpston, Upton and Ainsworth, close to the roman road know as King Street. The site may have been a Bronze Age Barrow and site of a Roman Shrine. The common thorn was being used as a boundry marker in 948. The present tree was planted at the suggestion of the John Clare Sopciety in 1996. "Oh Langley Bush! The shepherd's sacred shade" John Clare 1821. It was a meeting point for gypsies and one of John Clares favourite places.
