The Story of "Fiancés HANDKerchiefs"

The Fiancés' Handkerchiefs can be found all over the country, though it is more common in Alentejo, Minho and the Azores. It is precisely in Minho that the most important restoration of this art has taken place, as an important part of the culture of this region.

The Fiancés' Handkerchiefs were the most genuine poetic and artistic form used by the young girls of Minho to express their feelings when they were about to reach the age of marriage.

The origin of the fiancés' handkerchiefs, also known as "kerchiefs of proposal", is thought to date back to the 17th and 18th centuries' noble kerchiefs and were adapted by the woman of the people who made use of them when they aspired to win their fiancés' hearts.

At the beginning these kerchiefs were mainly used for decorative purposes and as a part of the female attire. They were originally a square shaped linen or cotton cloth and embroidered according to the taste/requirement of each embroideress.

Despite this origin, its name comes from its main purpose: to conquer the loved one.

The handkerchief was embroided during the girls' breaks in the day or long evenings when they were keeping the cattle. The girl in love would therefore pass to the kerchief the feelings that she had on her soul. She would wear it on Sunday on her waistband or in her apron's pocket. Later on she would offer it to the young man she was in love with as a proof of commitment.

In the container you will find leaflets (in several languages that you can take with you) and other souvenirs related with fiancées's handkerchiefs. You should trade this itens by otheres with love simbolic value.
