Geocache Description:

One of the “Historic Waynesboro” caches, inspired by the book "Images of America: Waynesboro" (Arcadia Pub ‘09). This geocache is at an historic Waynesboro locale. Park on Short St. Look for muggles. Cache not hidden on the bldg itself. Need own pen. Take out slowly/gently. Please replace the log within the little plastic straw, which keeps it rolled up, then replace. Thanks! This cache was replaced and moved very slightly a while back; coordinates are still the same.

This building, the Casco Cold Storage Plant, built in 1930 on Arch Avenue, offered year round storage services for the many apple growers in the area. Apples were a major crop in Waynesboro as well as in the Blue Ridge Mountains just to the east. As you stand and behold this brick monolith - rising more than eight stories above the ground - imagine it holding 55,000 bushels of apples, waiting to be processed or shipped out by train or truck. The building is now vacant except for flocks of pigeons and saplings growing in the roof. Enjoy this part of Waynesboro's history.
