Geocache Description:

The front area of the Cannery underwent some changes, so this cache is replacing the one that used to be here. It's a new container and a new hiding spot. Please place the container exactly where you found it.

Salmon is central to the identity of Steveston for many people. From the annual Salmon Festival to its former nickname “Salmonopolis”, the salmon theme can be found throughout the village for good reason. Historically, Steveston had the largest concentration of salmon canneries along the coast of British Columbia, and during canning season, the population grew exponentially as people flocked here to work for one of the 15 canneries that were part of Steveston’s Cannery Row.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery was built in 1894 and original buildings from the complex still exist today. With its three canning lines, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery was the largest cannery in Steveston until 1902, and was therefore known as the "Monster Cannery". Today, the Cannery is a Parks Canada National Historic site honouring Canada's fishing heritage by preserving and promoting West Coast Fishing History.

Other historic cannery buildings can be seen further east of Steveston Village. The Britannia Cannery at Britannia Shipyards National Historic site was built as a cannery in 1889 and converted to a shipyard in 1918. Moving slightly upriver from there stands the Paramount Cannery Complex whose initial construction dates back to 1906.

The boardwalk that connects these sites highlights Steveston's past with interpretive signage and remnants of some of the canneries that once dotted the waterfront. Reminders of this vibrant past are everywhere.

Enjoy your time in historic Steveston!
