Geocache Description:

"Mike Mulligan And His Steam Shovel" is a children's classic written by Gloucester author Virginia Lee Burton in 1938. She was a frequent visitor with Ralph Albertson at Chestnut Hill Farm in West Newbury. During a visit, Burton fell in love with the town and made several sketches which became the fictional town of Popperville.

In the story, Mike agrees to dig out the cellar hole for a new town hall with his trusty steam shovel "Mary Ann". In a conversation at the farm, however, Burton explains a dilemma, she had written the steam shovel into a hole - literally - and didn't know how to continue with the story.

Albertson's grandson Dick Berkenbush suggests that Mary Ann be made into the furnace for the new town hall. The problem was solved and the story had a happy ending. Popperville lives on in the hearts of children of all ages!!

Congratulations to HostaHead & FroedoBagginz on yet another FTF!!
