This two-step multicache is located along an easy walking trail.
Railton was once a railway junction connected by rail to Latrobe, Deloraine and Roland. The Railton to Roland line was used to bring agricultural products to market from the rich farming areas to the south and to send supplies from Railton to Sheffield and beyond. One of the supplies was beer and, with the help of some expertly crafted metal straws machined at the Railway Workshops in Launceston which were inserted through the bungs in the kegs, many a driver and guard arrived at Sheffield with a very happy disposition and the kegs not at capacity (spillage in transit was the official reason). One of the 2y’stassies grew up on a farm overlooking Railton and has many memories of weekends spent walking the disused line from Railton to explore the pine plantations at Stoodley, to collect the beautiful red fungi in autumn, to fish in Red Water Creek and to play in Red Water Cave.
At the published coordinates you will find yourself in front of an information sign outlining the history of the Mersey to Deloraine Tramway and the Railton to Roland Line. Collect the required information and then follow part of the track to locate the cache. You could then continue along this part of the Tasmanian Trail to Sykes Sanctuary for another cache (GCPM30 Sanctuary).
