Famous Witches (Mythical and Real)

Witchy, Witchy Witches have been popular subjects throughout history in tales, myths and legends. In more recent times, we have more reliable documentary evidence of real or supposed witches.

Merlin is best known as the wizard or warlock of Arthurian legend, who served as King Arthur's adviser, prophet and magician. There are so many stories and legends about Merlin that it is very difficult to find the core of truth behind them.

Moll Dyer was a legendary 17th Century resident of Leonardtown in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, who was accused of witchcraft and chased out of her home by the local townsfolk in the dead of a winter night. A road, a stream and a large rock all bear her name, and her story has inspired ghostly sightings and the plot of the 1999 film “The Blair Witch Project”.

Eleanor "Ray" Bone, sometimes known as the “Matriarch of British Witchcraft”, was an influential figure in modern witchcraft, and played an important part in the revival of contemporary Wicca. She claimed to have been initiated into a hereditary coven in Cumbria, was one of Gerald Gardner’s High Priestesses for a time, and later formed her own coven in South London. She was born in 1910 and passed away in 2001.
