Geocache Description:

A quick cache whilst shopping, or not as the case may be!

This is the 79th 'Off Yer Trolley!' cache placed in the UK so far...
As per most of this type, this cache is placed near a supermarket.

In August 1987 work got under way on clearing the 6.5 acre site of the former gas works off Queens Road. The first piles for the supermarket were driven on April 13 1988. On April 4 1989 the new superstore opened.

This is the only supermarket situated in the town centre of Hastings, as the other three are in St Leonards. However it is not particularly large and can often be quite crowded. Parking is monitored by CCTV and sometimes a parking attendant, but is free for 2 hours (no ticket/barrier system is in place).

A few snippets from rather historic local press...

From the Hastings News, 20/10/1848
A third gasholder had been erected at the Gas Works, off Queens Road. It was 60 feet in diameter and 18 feet deep, weighing 19 tons. Iguanodon skeletons were found.

From the Hastings Chronicle, 31/03/1851
The Duke of Brunswick and Henry Green made a balloon journey to Neufchatel near Boulogne from a field near the gas works [where the supermarket is today]. Thousands of people watched as the balloon was inflated with gas and then took off. The Duke was ‘on the run’, as he had committed perjury in a libel case, but he never returned to England.

Enjoy!
