Geocache Description:

Ignoring history can come back to haunt us.

If you have been following the news the last few years, you probably know some people in Uplands have been having big trouble with water in their basement and sump pumps constantly working even in dry periods . The city fathers are baffled. They are now hiring a consultant.

A litte history lesson would have been a lot cheaper. You geocachers should have a lot of fun following this story as it continues to develop.

Here’s my theory.
.

The map "Coal Mines of the Lethbridge district 1874 - 1982" shows that much of north Lethbridge sits above tunnels from underground coal mines. Galt Mines Nos. 1, 3 and 6 (The latter at Hardieville close to the Uplands area) were all prone to flooding. When the river rose the mines filled with water which was constantly being pumped out so the mines could be worked. Nobody's pumping them out now so guess what — they are full of water. (Newspaper clipping - January 8, 1951)

As I remember it, in the 1950s the Chinook Regional Hospital was going to be built just north of today's Galt Museum but was moved to its present location fearing problems from the mine tunnels in that area. For the next 50 years the area was kept as a parking lot only but has now been built on.

Ignoring history can come back to haunt us.
