Sadly, this cache area is just a small fragment of what's left of my childhood playland. The original area, now occupied by Green Pointe Drive and the newer extension of Abbey Road, was once a mix of forest, field and swamp. In the late-1970s, my friends and I would spend hours each day exploring, catching pollywogs, picking wild strawberries and building makeshift forts. Today, geocaching brings back these fond, nature-filled memories. With a GPSr in hand, I'm a kid again!
To the best of my recollection, the area just south of the cache site (now overtaken by single-detached homes) was where my friends and I went exploring one gray, dreary afternoon. To a six year-old, this dark and swampy section of the backyard forest seemed like a million miles away. The older kids had led us to a distant and mysterious world!
The rich smell of decaying leaves, the shadowy trees rising up from pools of murky water and a wispy layer of fog had us really spooked. I'm not sure if it was this eerie feeling or the fact that we were very gullible, but the older kids knew that this was the perfect time and place to mess with our minds. To this day, I remember being totally convinced that this uninhabited portion of the City of Welland, a place within walking distance of my home, was where the legendary Jedi Master, Yoda, lived in self-imposed exile. I still have flashbacks of us waiting for R2-D2 to emerge from the swamp!
