Penguins In Da Hoods of Wes Sto-Moun' Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

talk2azs: Looks like the Penguins have fled to a safer neighborhood. Guess they didn't like their home getting broken into all the time by the local criminals that live in the area. There is a reason this area is called "Da Hood"!

Geocache Description:

This is another easy "DRIVE BY" cache that expands this Penguin series that my good geocaching friend Sandi(Tallahassee-Lassie) in Tallahassee, FL has kept going. This makes the third of the series I have expanded into Georgia.

DO NOT HUNT THIS CACHE AT NIGHT, OR YOU MAY FALL VICTIM TO A "DRIVE BY" SHOOTING IN DEES' HOODS of EAST DEKALB COUNTY.

This cache is wheelchair accessible and you may not even have to get out of your geo-mobile to make the grab. That can be a good thing when hunting a cache in this urban decayed area.

I remember when this part of Memorial Drive was a thriving place. Many big name businesses were once located here when I first moved to Atlanta in 1984. A K-Mart was once located in the parking lot of this cache. I remember when the Texaco Gas station to the West of here was a true old school service station. When a car pulled up, a number of attendants ran to your car, filled it up, washed your windshield, and did other basic checks of your car. Even further to the West was where a Krispy Kreme once was located. And how can anyone forget the Mexican restaurant El Chico. That place was good. That location is still home to the Lense Crafters that moved into the place soon after El Chico closed down.

But after the construction of the median from I-285 to Hwy 78 in the late 80's, many businesses closed down or moved away. The WAVE hit this part of town and the residents moved further East into the next county. I was one of them. The rent started to drop in most of the apartment complexs along Memorial Drive. The crime rate started to soar. To me this part of Memorial Drive now looks like a war zone.

But I do at least have some good memories when I use to live in this area. Going even further down towards I-285, you can see some of the original businesses still in business today. The one that really does NOT surprise me is Hall's Package Store.

Now go get your quick smiley, DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS PLEASE!
