This is the 3rd version of Matt and Nico's toy box. They are getting bigger and wanting more adventure. When they arrive here in February...this well be on the list.
Those two love trains. So why not hide this is on an old railway? It is now The Pecatonica Prairie Path. Depending on the time of the year there maybe or not be some bushwhacking involved.
This part of the prairie path once was the Interurban line. The Rockford & Interurban Railway was a holding company that operated
city streetcar services in Rockford
and interurban services from Rockford
west to Freeport, Illinois, north to Beloit
and Janesville, Wisconsin, and east to Belvidere,
Illinois. In Freeport, an independent
company operated a streetcar system that
was partially on R&I trackage. An interurban trip from Chicago to Rockford took 3 hours and 45 minutes plus an additional hour to travel to Freeport.
Tortured financial problems and the introduction of the automobile sealed the demise of this line.
