The Claypool Tunnel (named for the town of Claypool about 20 miles to the East) sits on abandoned segment of U.S. Hwy 60. The tunnel was built in 1922. As highways are modernized, the upgrading process often abandons segments of earlier roads. A segment of U.S. Hwy 60 east of Superior to the Claypool Tunnel is an example of one of these abandoned roads. The Queen Creek Tunnel replaced the Claypool tunnel in 1952.
