Geocache Description:

A major development in railway track relocation in the vicinity of Pietermaritzburg came in 1955 with the construction of the Cedara twin tunnels, each bore measuring 6 023m in length. On 17 July 1958 the bore for the 'up' tunnel was holed through. Four months later, the headings of the 'down' tunnel met perfectly. A ceremony was held at the south portals on 28 March 1960, officially to open the tunnels to traffic. The tunnels not only made redundant most of the Town Hill deviation of 1916, but also reduced the length of track required for the ascent from Boughton to Cedara by 6,8 km. The Cedara twin tunnels have the distinction of currently being the second longest railway tunnels in Africa.
This geocache is located near the northern portal. The altitude of the cache is 1053m AMSL.
