Cache placed with approval of Green Ridge State Forest Manager
****CACHE SHOULD BE ACCESSED FROM MERTENS AVENUE.****
This overlook is named in memory of Banner Shipley, a forest warden killed while on duty by a falling tree limb along Double Pine Rd. From this point, you can see across the Potomac River and into West Virginia. A wildfire occurred on this hillside in 1991. The Great Eastern Trail (blazed white) follows Mertens Avenue, passing by this overlook.
This cache is located near the popular Banner's Overlook at the intersection of Mertens Avenue and Stafford Road. Mertens Avenue is a dirt road, but most vehicles can travel on Mertens Avenue during normal conditions. You may call the forest headquarters for current road conditions at 301-478-3124. This is especially recommended in the winter months as several forest roads are not plowed.
**STAFFORD ROAD HAS BEEN CLOSED**
Green Ridge State Forest is one of Maryland's largest state forests and consists of approximately 46,000 acres of pine, oak, and hickory forests. Recreational opportunities include camping, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, public shooting range, hunting, fishing, and paddling. The nearby C& O Canal (operated by the National Park Service) offers biking, hiking, and horseback riding opportunities. The state of Maryland obtained the first portions of GRSF in 1931, and has continued to manage the forest for many uses.
