Hyrax Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is off the Bear Creek Trail near its border with Cosmo Park. When I say off the trail, I mean a good 100 feet or so through wooded area with no real trail. I saw some poison ivy in there, so be careful. Altitude changes at the cache are significant, and footing is rocky.
The cache is an 7.5" x 7.5" tupperware container. It is pretty well hidden, but experienced cachers will know where to look. The original contents of the cache included two geocoins, free movie passes, a wheresgeorge.com $1 bill, and a few other interesting items.
As far as the name of the cache goes, I give you the following from Wikipedia:
"Hyraxes are sometimes described as being the closest living relative to the elephant. Although relatively closely related, not all scientists support the proposal that hyraxes are the closest living relative of the elephant. Recent morphological and molecular based classifications reveal the sirenians to be the closest living relatives of elephants, while hyraxes are closely related but form an outgroup to the assemblage of elephants, sirenians, and extinct orders like Embrithopoda and Desmostylia."
