Grand
Provence Moustiers-Sainte-Marie entdeckte man erste menschliche
beschilderte Wanderung „Grand Margès“ an.

This cache will lead you to the
summit of the Grand Margès, providing
breathtaking views of the Gorges du Verdon, Lac de Sainte-Croix and
the plateau of Valensole. When the weather conditions are good, the
Mont Ventoux (1912m) is visible at the horizon, at slightly misty
weather conditions, it however guarantees a view of Mont Chiran,
which shelters an observatory on his 1905m high summit.
The Grand Margès belongs to the
highest elevations of the environs of the impressive Canyon du
Verdon.
The Verdon is a world of rocks,
water and a fantastic world of animals and plants. This amazing,
sometimes peaceful and sometimes chaotic world can be discovered in
a few hours or in many days. The gorges with their wild landscape
and their difficult access, have been a refuge and transit area for
warriors and hunters, but not a settlement site. In
Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, the probably most beautiful village of
Provence, remains of human settlement were discovered, which have
been dated to 12,000 BC.
The part of the Canyon, which can be seen from the summit of the
Grand Margès is the most beautiful scenic section, located between
the village La Palud and the lake Lac
de Sainte-Croix, with the adjacent village Les Salles-sur-Verdon.
This newly constructed village replaced the old village as the
reservoir Lac de Sainte-Croix 1973 was flooded. This makes it the
youngest village in France. The dam was under construction since
1971and has been completed in 1974, the damming of the river
started in 1973. The reservoir covers almost 22 square kilometers
in area, with a maximum depth of about 90 meters. It is after the
Lac de Serre-Ponçon the second largest lake in France and is used
to serve the environment with both electricity and water.
In order to reach the summit, it is recommended to take the
official marked hiking path “Grand Margès". It starts in
Aiguines (altitude 825m) at the beginning of the corniche sublime
near the campsite "l'aigle". Here you can leave your car at the
parking. Directly behind the parking the climb begins first to the
“Petit Margès” and the Clot de la Glacière, which
already provides magnificent views. From here it is possible to see
the vultures, which live in the gorges. Passing ball thistles and
lavender, it goes up to the summit. It's worth to bring some time
and a field glasses to enjoy the beautiful view.
200 million years ago, when the
canyon, in which we look down, not even existed, this area was
covered by the sea, which was populated by various ammonites.
During this prevailing tropical climate plaster was deposited in
the lagoons gradually.
About 60 million years later, corals were washed up
from the shallow part of the sea, which are responsible for the
light stone, which can be seen here. The remains of some coral
can be seen near La Maline. La Maline is a starting point of a
different walking route and can also be seen from the summit of the
Grand Margès. The light rock is the base stone for the plateau, in
which the Verdon would later cut his way.
About 120 million years ago the sea
finally deepened, so that the water receeded and the region around
the Grand Margès was populated by snails, ammonites and sea urchins
disappear due to the lack of water. The crucial turning point
occurs 65 million years ago as tectonic shifts lead to a folding of
the landscape. From this event the height of the Grand Margès
results.
The Messinian salinity crisis represents a chapter in the history
of earth, in which the Mediterranean was partially or completely
dried up. This happened about five to six million years ago, at the
end of the Messin, the last stage of the Miocene. During this
period of time severe erosion of the Alps took place. This erosion
finally lead to an increase of the flow rate of the Verdon. Due to
this increase the Verdon was able to dig the deep trechnes in the
landscape. The course of these trenches can be seen very well from
the given coordinates.
To log this cache, please take a picture of
you with your navigation in front of the beautiful view and answer
the following questions:
1. What is written on the marking you
can find at the given coordinates?
2. Which kind of rock builds the major
part of the Gorges?
3. What is he height of the Grand
Margès?
4. Please name three rivers, which
feed the Verdon.
For the return, there are two
possibilities: Either you take back the same way, or you descend
through the Petit Forêt to the corniche sublime and then take the
very challenging walk over the abyss of Vaumale. This trail covers
17km and needs about 8 hours of walking.
Have fun!

vraie.
ammonites. Sous un climat tropical et dans des
endroits lagunaires se précipitent du gypse.
A peu près 60 millions d'années
cheminer.
