Geocache Description:

A nice quick stop along the Trans Canada Hwy
The rail line at the site is active so do not cross the tracks.
This is a wild life viewing area. Please be respectful of the sensitive area and cache in trash out.

The lakes and wet lands that exist in this area are nestled between two mountain ranges. In the south east of British Columbia, the Purcell and Selkirk, to the west the more ragged peaks to the east of the Rocky Mountains. The Purcell and Selkirk mountains are reminents of volcanoes which reached heights of 3,000 meters. The Rocky Mountains were the result of uplifting and are approximately the same in height. The higher peaks of both ranges remain snow capped in the summer.

The wetlands themselves are one of the largest in North America and encompass over 26,000 hectors. With draining more than 670,000 SQ KM’s this makes it the fourth largest river system on the continent.

There are 17 species of fish in the area as well as being home to more than 50 mammals. There are also 265 species of birds nesting or migrating through this part of the pacific flyway.

This is the last remaining undeveloped portion of the Columbia River and as such was declared a wildlife area achieving international recognition as a part of the living water network. On June 5 2005 these wetlands were designated a world Ramsar Site. On June 24th 1965 The Province of British Columbia declared it a Provincial Park. The land was donated to the people of British Columbia by Burges and James Gadsden.
