Margaret Island was officially declared a public garden in 1908 and became property of the Municipal Council of Public Works. Large quantity of irrigation water was needed for the maintenance of the 96.5 hectare park, that's why wells, a pumping station, network and a water tower was built. The water tower was finished in 1911 with the then revolutionary technology of reinforced concrete.
Reinforced concrete pillars support the main framework on which a 600 m3 reinforced concrete tank was placed. The tower was erected on a corrugated reinforced concrete flat plate. The water supply system was working separately from the city, in 1950 it was also taken over by the Waterworks. Seen the excellent conditions, more wells were built and the surplus water was fed into the network through the Margaret bridge. Consequently, the fate of the bridge was sealed, the increased pressure in the network exceeded the 40 m height of the tower reservoir.
Today the tower is an industrial monument, an important part of Budapest's townscape and became the symbol of the Waterworks of Budapest Co., LTD. It is rented out as a lookout tower and an exhibition venue. The tower extends 57 metres above ground and another 5 metres below; the viewing level is at 53 metres.
Important: Cars and motorcycles are not allowed on the island. There is no pen in the cache, so bring your own! The hiding place is busy in the day time. Watch out for muggles!
A Margitszigetet közkertté nyilvánították 1908-ban, és a Fõvárosi Közmunkák Tanácsának tulajdona lett. A 96,5 hektár területû park fenntartásához jelentõs mennyiségû öntözõvízre volt szükség, ezért a kedvezõ adottságú területen kutakat, gépházat, hálózatot és egy víztornyot építettek. A víztorony 1911-ben készült el az akkor forradalminak számító vasbeton technológiával, Zielenszky Szilárd mûszaki és ifj. Ray Rezsõ mûvészi tervei szerint.
Vasbeton pillérek alkotják a fõ tartószerkezetet, amelyre a 40 m magasságban elhelyezett, 600 m3-es vasbeton tartály súlya nehezedett. A torony egy bordás vasbeton síklapon áll. A vízellátó rendszer a "várositól" függetlenül mûködött, 1950-ben ezt is átvette a vízmûvek. Felismerve a sziget kitûnõ adottságait, további kutakat építettek, a többletvizet a Margit hídon át a hálózatba juttatták. Ezzel megpecsételõdött a torony sorsa, mert a megemelkedett hálózati nyomás meghaladta a toronymedence 40 m-es magasságát.
A torony ma ipari mûemlék, szerves része Budapest városképének, és a Fõvárosi Vízmûvek Zártkörûen Mûködõ Részvénytársaság jelképe. A víztorony már évtizedek óta nyugalomba vonult, a medencét kiszerelték belõle, ma kilátótoronyként és kiállítóteremként használják a bérlõi. A torony a föld felett 57 méter magas (a kilátószint 53 méteren van) és még 5 méter mélyen húzódik a föld alatt.
Fontos: Az autók és a motorok ki vannak tiltva a szigetrõl. Nincs toll a ládában, ezért hozd magaddal a sajátodat! A rejtekhely forgalmas napközben. Vigyázz a muglikra!
