Near what is today known as Longfellow Bridge not far from where this geocache takes you, Officer William Loughrey became the first Cambridge police officer killed in the line of duty on June 26, 1860. James Hurley, who three weeks prior had been released from prison for robbery was the culprit. Officer Loughrey, came upon Hurley as he responded to a report of a break-in at a shoe store nearby. As he attempted to arrest Hurley, a furious struggle ensued, and Hurley opened up his clasp knife and began to stab the officer. Help eventually came, and Hurley was bound with rope and taken to jail. Loughrey was taken to his home, where three hours later, he passed away. Loughrey left a wife and four children, and the Cambridge City Council ordered a sum of $500 to be paid to the family. Loughrey made $2 per day as an officer.
In 2005, the Cambridge City Council dedicated this walkway, part of “Old Sixth Street” in his honor. And coincidentally (or not), Cambridge Police Headquarters is located a block away, where the present Sixth Street begins.
