Geocache Description:

Another of the Historic Waynesboro series of caches, inspired by the book "Images of America: Waynesboro" (Arcadia Publishing, 2009). The cache is in a spot from which several historic buildings/sites can be seen. NOTE: This cache is updated as of 6/21/14 in honor of our wedding day! Please sign the log AND read the poem if you have a few minutes for a bit more fun! (NOTE: the "bit more fun" is temporarily gone. Will replace soon!) Congrats Elliotts4 for FTF!

Main Street Hill has long been a focal point of Waynesboro. Take a look at the house in front of which you found the cache. This circa 1900 house once served as the Main Street Methodist Church parsonage.
As you stand and look east down the slope of Main Street Hill, note the old Wayne Theater half-way down the block. This theater is currently being restored under the direction of the Wayne Theatre Alliance. The Wayne opened its doors to movie-goers in 1926 and closed in 1999. The renovated theater should open once more in late 2014, and will serve as a spot for performances of all kinds.
Backing up the hill, moving westward, you can see a white brick home (533 W. Main Street) that was built around 1835. This house, which belonged to Dr. Fulton, served as a hospital during the Civil War (there were two battles in Waynesboro during that war.)
Across the street from where the cache is located, you'll see the building that used to house Waynesboro's Presbyterian Church (1878-1912). It then served as the Star Theater, and in 1929 the News-Virginian, the town newspaper, moved in, making some major renovations. The News-Virginian moved its offices from this building to another location farther west in 2005, leaving this structure empty. We think it would be a great place for artists’ studios, if we had the money to buy it and fix it up. But we digress…
Looking south a block along Church Street (the street that intersects Main Street at the top of the hill) you will see a portion of Fishburne Military School. This school was founded by James A. Fishburne in 1879 as Waynesboro High School, a co-educational facility, but by 1882 it had become the all-boys military school. It continues to educate young men.
Looking west, note Main Street United Methodist Church at the corner of Church Street and Main Street. Methodists have had a congregation in Waynesboro since 1824. The first church was located near the Florence Avenue Bridge (to the north) but was moved to the top of Main Street Hill in 1874. The church has been renovated several times since then.
Main Street Hill itself is the starting point of the Blue Ridge Soap Box Derby Classic, held each year in Waynesboro. The first derby was run here in 1961 (when only boys were allowed, no girls). The races were stopped in 1972 but resumed again in 1992 and have been held annually since. Main Street Hill has also presented a challenge over the last 200 + years to travelers during times of ice and snow.
