Geocache Description:

A large cache located on a small island in Otago Harbour that you can walk to at low tide. You will need to plan your trip to this cache and it should be done in the company of others. There may be a short climb involved :)

Pudding Island (Titeremoana) is a scenic reserve in Otago Harbour. It is probably a place that few have taken notice of, other than the momentary glance as they drive past.

From the ODT on 12.7.1910:

Titeremoana (Pudding Island) which is situated in Otago Harbour, a few chains from the mainland on the Dunedin side of Portobello, is a well-known feature in that locality.

Although its area is little more than two acres in extent, this little knoll rising from the water has a pleasing appearance on account of its being clad with native shrubbery, flax, etc, and it is to be regretted that the carelessness of some visitors to the spot last December resulted in the more open portion being completely swept by a fire.

The Government decided to bring the island under the provisions of the Scenery Preservation Act, and replant the burnt portion with native trees and shrubs.

This work resulted in a fine selection of the more hardy species being planted.

These include the native birches (properly beech), broadleaf, cabbage-tree, veronica, kowhai, karaka, olearia, pittosporum, and a number of other kinds - about 1000 plants in all.

Any person lighting a fire on the reserve or doing any injury to the small plantation will now be subject to a heavy penalty under the powers conferred by the Scenery Preservation Act.

With the passing of a few years the difference in the appearance of Titeremoana (to give the island its native name) will be much appreciated by the many who make the pleasant locality of Broad Bay and Portobello their summer resort.

This cache is best attempted at low tide. To check the tide times, go to NIWA Tide Forecaster and select "Otago Harbour Entrance" as the location. At the right time you can get all the way across with dry feet. Wet or dry you'll need shoes to protect your feet from the rocks.

On the island you'll need to locate the knotted rope that will assist you in climbing up onto the top. Beware - this is not a climb for the faint of heart and you should take great care going up and coming back down.

Once at the top of the climb there is a rough track leading around the island. Go left as the best route to the cache is that way (in my opinion). WARNING: At all times on the island take care. There are cliffs (you would have just climbed one) and some prickly plants. In particular near ground zero there are some cliffs that you should be wary of. I would strongly advise not attempting this cache if it has been raining.

This cache is rated 4/4.5 in light of the fact that you will need to plan your trip and that there is some physically demanding elements to it. The terrain is certainly 4.5 - you have been warned!.

You are looking for a 15 litre bucket painted green.

Please take great care of the Pudding Island reserve, particularly of the flora and fauna there. It is a lovely spot and it is important we take care of it.
