The One Left Behind Traditional Cache
chubby forest monkey: I have a feeling this one has been stolen again. I guess someone doesn't want this cache to be here. I just replaced it a few months ago.

Park at the orange gate at mp 8.5 on Larch Mountain Rd. Walk up the gravel road about 1/4 mile, then turn right on an old track that will lead you to the grove. It starts out very brushy and lumpy, but will open up and be obvious once you get under the trees.
What can you read about this forest as you travel through?
This area was logged about 80 years ago. Decades later, people came in to harvest bolts(cedar shakes) from the stumps. You can see the stumps with the springboard notches everywhere. Cutting a tree above the flared base at 6-10 feet saved a lot of time when you were using a hand saw.
Look closer. Many of the stumps show evidence of withstanding the natural cycle of wildfires that came through regularly before humans started harvesting trees as a business. With this industrialization of the forest came our attempts at suppressing wildfires. It's not easy to control Mother Nature.
Now it is a mature forest, but it will take another century before you can call it "old growth".
Rednecks have done some transient damage. I thank you for helping remove their evidence! This area used to be popular for off-roading, dumping garbage and target shooting. In recent years, the shooting and ATVs have been banned, the gates have been reinforced, and patrols on the road have increased. How will we treat our forest in the decades to come?
The cache is located near a giant cedar that was left behind. What was once common is now very special. Why do you think they left this one?
