The GZ is located at the Volcanic Activity Centre. A hands-on interactive educational centre that makes learning about the earths volcanic forces easy and fun for all ages.
Located in the heart of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, the Volcanic Activity Centre brings the explosive past and present volcanic and geothermal features to life.
You don't need to access the centre to complete the cache, but a visit is worth the while.
The Taupo Volcanic Zone stretches from the magnificent volcanoes of the Tongariro National Park through Rotorua an active geothermal area to New Zealand’s most active volcano White Island.
This area is considered one of the most active geothermal and volcanic areas in the world today and covers an area of 19,635km.
Many of the fantastic natural features in this area are attributed to the Taupo Volcanic Zone and at the Volcanic Activity Centre, we explain in an entertaining way how all this comes about.
To complete the cache you need to e-mail us the answers the following questions/tasks:
1) How were most NZ volcanos formed?
2) List the eight volcanoes on the yellow road-sign and indicate their distance from the GZ.
3) Name the "unit of measure" used to classify the Magnitude of earthquakes and explain how this scale works.
4) List the Reference Number, Time , Magnitude Depth and Details of the last three earthquakes in New Zealand. There is a link from the Volcanoes website.
