Cache is in Wixon Cemetery. There is a drive-through gate at the road where the historical marker is also located. Access to the cemetery itself is via a walk-through gate at N 30° 45.363' W 096° 18.712'. Wixon was a rural farming community, settled in the late 1860s. The Wixon School and Wixon Cumberland Presbyterian Church were established in the 1870s, on land adjacent to the cemetery. Both school and church closed in the 1930s. Many of the area's early settlers are buried here, including at least 17 Confederate Civil War veterans. The current town of Wixon Valley, a mile or two away, takes its name from the earlier community.
This cemetery is set back a fair distance from the farm road, among trees and brush. Cache is approx. 1/10 mile from road - about half of this distance can be driven. There is access through a gate to a dirt and gravel road, which seems to be passable in most circumstances. I have traversed it after a heavy rain, and had no problems in a regular vehicle, though I would suggest care in turning around to drive back out if it was very wet and muddy. There is no navigable road in the cemetery, so you must walk in. There seem to have been recent efforts in reclaiming this cemetery from overgrowth, and keeping it accessible. The grass can get fairly tall, however. I've noticed some briars and poison ivy here and there, so take care. There also seems to be considerable wildlife in the area – I saw several deer in the woods the first time I visited. As always in the country, keep an eye out for snakes and other creepy-crawly critters.
Congrats to Retired for the FTF!
