Geocache Description:

You are looking for a micro in the shadow of the world's most legendary racetrack -- Churchill Downs. Bring a pencil and avoid muggles by going on a non-racing day.

Kentucky Derby Facts:

The Kentucky Derby is the longest continually held sporting event in the United States – held every year since 1875 despite wars, the Great Depression, or natural disasters.

The Kentucky Derby is Louisville’s most attended single event – drawing about 150,000 fans each year on the first Saturday in May.

There are about 34,000 thoroughbreds born annually in North America. There are also an untold number born in the rest of the world. At most, 20 will run in the Derby.

The race is open to colts (boys) and fillies (girls) who are 3 years old.

In North America, no matter when a horse is born, it will become a year older on January 1st. Hence, a horse foaled (born) in 2010 will be eligible for the Kentucky Derby only on the first Saturday in May of 2013.

in 1896, the winner actually finished 7th! that’s right, seventh. look it up!

Three fillies have won: Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980 and Winning Colors in 1988.

In1929, Clyde Van Dusen, the horse, won for Clyde Van Dusen, the trainer. The trainer did not name the horse in a fit of vanity. The horse, a son of Man o’ War, was named by Herbert Gardner, its breeder and owner. “Clyde is a little horse, and that is why Mr. Gardner named him after me,” said Van Dusen, a former jockey. Van Dusen ended up owning his namesake after his racing career, using the Derby winner as an exercise pony.

Richard Nixon attended the Kentucky Derby for the first time in 1968. Coincidentally, it was the only time the Derby winner was disqualified for cheating. Dancer’s Image finished first but was disqualified because of illegal medication. Forward Pass was declared the winner.

11 Derby winners have gone on to win the Triple Crown — the Derby, Preakness and Belmont. The last was Affirmed in 1978.

When you look around you will see that Churchill Downs is not only the unparalleled leader in horseracing, but in being a caring community as well. From the cache you will see things that show the care given to the barn workers. Who would have ever expected a church on the backside of the track??? But there it is, the 350 seat chapel where the chaplain and his assistant care for the spiritual needs of workers. Not seen, but present is the library and classrooms where workers can take classes and use computers/internet free of charge. There is also a recreation building, a dormitory, and a horsemen's restaurant. A true Louisville gem!
